Alaska

Two of the following three required for license renewal: 30 contact hours, OR 30 hours professional nursing activities, OR 320 hours nursing employment.


Arkansas

As of 7/1/03-6/30/04, 8 contact hours will be required. As of 7/1/04, 15 contact hours will be required.

California

Connecticut

Delaware

30 contact hours every 2 years.


District of Columbia

CE not required.


Florida

25 contact hours every 2 years, including mandatory one-hour programs addressing HIV/AIDS and domestic violence. As of July 1, 2001, 2 contact hours must be in prevention of medical errors. Mandatory programs require a FL State Board of Nursing provider number.


Georgia

Hawaii

CE not required.


Idaho

Illinois

Indiana

Iowa

36 contact hours for a 3 year license and 24 contact hours for less than 3 year license.


Kansas

30 contact hours every 2 years. There is no maximum on the number of independent study hours that can be obtained.


Kentucky

30 contact hours every 2 years. 2 contact hours (of the 30) must be AIDS-related and must be approved by the KY Cabinet for Health Services. 3 contact hours domestic violence - (one time requirement - nurses licensed prior to 7/15/96 must complete by 6/30/99; nurses licensed after 7/15/96 must complete within 3 years of licensure) First time renewals exempt from CE requirement


Louisiana

Based on employment: 5 contact hours (full-time) 10 contact hours (part-time) 15 contact hours (not employed or worked less than 160 hours)

Maryland

CE not required.


Massachusettes

15 contact hours every 2 years.


Michigan

25 contact hours every 2 years. There is no maximum on the number of independent study hours that can be obtained from an accredited organization such as ANCC. Unaccredited programs such as workshops have a maximum of 10 contact hours.


Minnesota

24 contact hours every 2 years. Has dropped the 2 contact hour requirement on infection control.


Mississippi

Missouri

Montana

CE not required.


Nebraska

20 contact hours every 2 years.


Nevada

30 contact hours every 2 years.


New Hampshire

30 contact hours every 2 years. No more than 15 contact hours may be individualized learning activities.


New Jersey

New Mexico

30 contact hours every 2 years. First time renewals exempt from CE requirement.


New York

3 contact hours infection control every 4 years; 2 contact hours child abuse (one time requirement for initial license); Programs must be from an approved provider.


North Carolina

Ohio

24 contact hours every 2 years. At least one contact hour must be related to Chapters 4723,1-23 of the Ohio nurse practice code and rules.

Tennessee

Continuing Education for relicensure is not mandatory in Tennessee. However, mandatory continuing competency is required in Tennessee. In order to maintain continued competence, the board requires the nurse to have practiced in nursing in the last five (5) years and additionally, the Board sets out standards of competence and requirements to maintain competence.


Texas

20 contact hours every 2 years. Licenses renewed 6/1/2002 through 6/1/2004 are required to complete 2 contact hours relating to Hepatitis C. This is a one time requirement.


Utah

One of the following every 2 years required for license renewal: 30 contact hours, OR 200 practice hours and 15 contact hours, OR 400 practice hours.


Vermont

Virginia

Washington

West Virginia

30 contact hours every 2 years including: 2 contact hours on end of life care including pain management.
